AECOsim Building Designer adds two actions to the Compress options user interface, File menu > Compress > Options dialog:

  • Delete Building Dataset Elements
  • Delete Building Display Accelerators

Building Dataset Elements and Building Display Accelerators are cached by AECOSim Building Designer to speed up operation of any files containing Dynamic Views. Both of these actions should be unticked unless you need to remove cached data from files. Ticking these actions is not recommended in normal operation.

The cached data results in larger file sizes but this does not equate to longer file opening, quite the opposite. If the cached data is compressed out file opening can be extended while the caches are rebuilt.

To ensure that users do not inadvertently turn these actions on they can be pre-set in the site configuration by adding the following:

MS_COMPRESS_OPTIONS   =
+DEFAULT;-BUILDING_DATASET_ELEMENTS;-BUILDING_DISPLAY_ACCELERATORS

The order of the statement is crucial, +DEFAULT ticks all the boxes (which you generally want ticked), the following '-' entries untick the two Building actions .

These values can be added at the site level in the Standards.cfg or set in an AECOSim Building Designer level configuration file.

If set at site level where MicroStation is using the same Standards.cfg as AECOSim Building Designer the additional AECOSim Building Designer specific statements will not cause any errors.

Problem Description

There is no No IFC Mapping for Space DataGroup Types.

Reason

AECOsim Building Designer SS4 now assigns models to Spatial Containment.

Steps to Resolve

You can search for "assigning buildings and floors" in the ABD help: that covers the Assign dialog's ability to map Site, Building and Floor.  Note the additional Project and Site levels in the SS4 Floor Manager tree.

The IFC Export dialog box opens when IFC is chosen from File menu > Export.
This dialog box also opens with the Key-in: IFCOUT.

The active DGN file is exported by information and settings specified in the Output tab including the model view definition, add-on views, mapping options, spatial structure, and output options. A Messages group box also displays information to assist the user in successfully exporting an IFC file.

An Author tab is available to include export file author information, the author's organization information, and additional export comments and information.

Progress of the export is displayed in a separate popup dialog box when the Export button is pressed. Subsequent export status and information messages are displayed in the application status bar Message Center.

Output tab
The following settings and IFC Export controls are available from the Output tab:

1. Model View Definition — Sets the model view definition schema used to export the IFC file. Available options include: IFC 2x3 Coordination View 2.0 and Facilities Management Handover.
WARNING: If the same exported file name exists in the output directory, the existing file is over written without warning.

2. Output Options group box

Create COBie Spreadsheet – Enabled when the Facilities Management Handover Model View Definition is selected, A COBie spreadsheet is created upon export, when on.

Open COBie Spreadsheet – Enabled when the Create COBie Spreadsheet setting is on, the COBie spreadsheet is opened upon export, when on.

Create i-model – Enabled when the Create COBie Spreadsheet setting is on, an i-model is created upon export, when on.

Zip IFC File – A compressed ZIP file is generated (in place of a flat IFC file) upon export, when on.

3. Mapping Options group box

Map DataGroup Types and Properties (primary mapping) – This button opens the Map DataGroup Types and Properties to IFC dialog box where datagroup types and properties are mapped by class and property to the IFC Export file.

4. Map Family/Parts (secondary mapping) – This button opens the Map Custom BuildingDesigner Dataset to IFC Dataset dialog box.

Here part and family properties are mapped to IFC entities

5.Spatial Structure group box

Assign Building and Floors – This button opens the Assign Models to Spatial Containment dialog box.

Here a site/building and floor can be assigned to each model in the active project before the active DGN file is exported.

6. IFC Author group box

  • First Name – Enter the first name of the author that exported the IFC
    file.

  • Last Name – Enter the last name of the author that exported the IFC file.

  • Role – Enter the role/position of the author that exported the IFC file.

  • E-Mail – Enter the e-mail of the author that exported the IFC file.

  • Phone – Enter a phone number for the author that exported the IFC
    file.

7. Organization group box

  • Name – Enter the organization name for the author that exported the IFC
    file.

  • Country – Enter the name of the country where the organization, for the
author that exported the IFC file, is located.

  • Postal Code – Enter the postal code where the organization, for the author
that exported the IFC file, is located.

  • City – Enter the city where the organization, for the author that exported
    the IFC file, is located.

  • State – Enter the state where the organization, for the author that exported
    the IFC file, is located.

  • Address – Enter the postal address where the organization, for the author
that exported the IFC file, is located. Two address fields are available to
    enable completeness of address
    information.

8. Comment group box — This text box is available to enter any other required,
supplementary, or miscellaneous information and comments.

Export button

Exports the IFC file and closes the dialog box.

Problem Description

Some DataGroup properties in the Place Door dialog box are grayed out and cannot be modified.

Reason

The "Editable" flag is not checked on for the door property in the DataGroup Catalog Editor.

Steps to Resolve

1. Open the DataGoup Catalog Editor.

2. Select the Catalog Item (door).

3. Select the door on the left side and on the right side look in the "Editable" column.

4. If a check mark is not in the box, check it to make the property editable.

5. Save.

It would be good if the CVE would be more flexible, and allow levels to be turned on/off, and all the other stuff that Ref's can do. CR?

Haven't tried it but, I suppose you could switch back to Dynamic, turn the levels on/off then, flip the Ref's setting back to CVE?

The ISM mapping thing sounds interesting....

Maybe Bentley should do a Object Enabler Interpreter after its done with the RFA Interpreter :-)

I agree CVE's can go further...

DEM had the advantage that it produced a normal Ref, that could benefit from all the normal tools that can be applied to Ref's built up over the years.

I wouldn't want to give up all the re-symbolisation / DV cuts etc and go back to "pure wireframe"...

Hopefully with the upcoming 64bit port, CVE's can / will be amp'd up."...  to be able to switch a few levels off/on, adjust Ref colours, use Level Symbology, have separate cut/forward/back models without having to copy the models etc
I believe ABD do have a ProSteel object enabler built in, otherwise it would not be possible to see the full PS model as we do today,
I think in AutoCAD, the missing bits are replaced by proxies, which were famously known as 'zombie' elements that could not be manipulated. If so, then there should be a way to flag these missing bits in Mstn as well?

I don't see why a wireframe can't look like a BV with resymbolisation ?

If/when BVs are quick to load- then this discussion would look different.

(I can still see reasons for a time stamped editable output from CVE)

Hi Ibraheem,

the large level name dictionary message was discussed several times already, it can be useful to search for such discussions and see what was written there. I guess if you will check Detail description in Message Center, there will be an advice to compress the design file, which should be the first step in the problem resolution.

Unfortunately I have no answer for your second question.

Problem Description

Is Bentley Cloudworx v04.02.04.253 compliant with all Cyclone versions?

Steps to Resolve

The current Bentley version of Cloudworx, v04.02.04.253, is compliant with all Cyclone versions from 6.0 to the latest version 8.  You can get access to Cyclone 8 through the Leica Geosystems website.
Also, the only difference between the Cloudworx version Bentley provides and the latest version provided by Leica is a licensing fix related to leica licensing. (Not Bentley licensing).

I'm not a ProSteel guy myself, but as I understand it the graphics do require an enabled in order to behave "normally" outside of ProSteel itself, though I can't really comment any more than that because I really don't know what I'm talking about.    ;-)

The i-model route does seem simplest if the files are only used as a background of sorts.   For a more "robust" mechanism, it would be hard to beat ISM.

Forum Post: Re: Which tools to use for timber construction?

Getting back to that post again...

I've really tried to make use of the provided buttons, but in my opinion it'snot easy. Here's my proposal, meaning some drastic changes to the layout.

The tools we have at the moment are very static. Designing strange constructions where AECOSim doesn't provide the right tool are not straightforward.
The setup is based on names which are common in the US, but not outside. If we take steel constructions, right now we have those:

  • steel Column primary
  • steel beam primary
  • tapered member
  • steel purlin
  • steel cladding
  • steel brace (vertical)
  • steel brace (horizontal)
  • steel X-bracing
  • steel K-bracing
  • steel trusses
  • bar joists
  • joist girder
  • steel framed building
  • deck
Quite impressive - yes. But on the one hand it is not complete...
  • where are secondary or tertiary steel columns and beams
  • what about wires and cables
  • crane beams
  • ...

...and on the other side it is not very flexible, because each tool is connected to one - and just one - datagroup property.

This problem is even more visible when it comes to concrete and timber constructions. And what about aluminium? And materials we don't even know about?

I would rather recommend designing things around what can be done with a tool, and put the intelligence there.

Tools based on profiles from the database

  • this tool would replace the ones marked with yellow in the attachment.
  • within the tool you can choose which datagroup property you want to use, sorted by material (steel, concrete, timber, aluminium). When using something in steel, you would get the steel profiles.
  • you could have some favourites, which you use very often, and which can be saved. If you like, you could assign a small image to each of your favourites
  • there would be a couple of different possibilities of how to set out the profile, similar to what we have now.

Tools based on linear elements

  • walls

Tools based on plane elements

  • slabs

Parametric things

  • stairs
  • framed buildings

You are correct, Thomas; when a CVE is referenced into another file/model you cannot control the display of the cached elements from that other file/model. This is simply the nature of cached graphics, as Dan mentioned.

At this time I'd imagine the most straightforward method would be to right-click > exchange into the drawing, select and hide the applicable cached elements, then return to the original file where the CVE is being referenced.   Maybe there is a simpler way to do this, but I can't think of one at the moment.

Hi Ibraheem, I would recommend submitting this to support so that it can be further investigated.  If you do so, please describe what you were doing in ABD at the time of the crash, and also include the minidump file referenced in the log:

Wrote a mini-dump type 0x4 to "C:\Users\inashashibi\AppData\Local\Temp\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner\8.11\eR_5z_9gzQxmBI6Olu-MiQ\MiniDump.dmp".

My irritation as Architect trying to place timber posts and beams is that I need to Load Structural even to see a Timber option - and US Metric dataset has not managed to deliver metric named objects eg 4x4 post (with volume in cu. ft.!)
